CV – Personal Website – browman@bc.edu
Dr. Alexander Browman is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Department of Counseling, Developmental, and Educational Psychology in the Lynch School of Education at Boston College. His research examines how identity guides motivation and achievement, with a focus on the experiences of youth and young adults from disadvantaged backgrounds. Some of his primary research projects explore:
1) How disadvantaged youths’ perceptions of the availability of opportunity in society influence motivation and persistence in future-focused domains like education and financial decision-making;
2) The dynamics of how motivation varies as people navigate and switch between their numerous idiosyncratic identities and the implications for academic fit, and;
3) How messages about financial aid can strengthen or undercut academic motivation and identification among students from low-income backgrounds.

![]() Chen Shen
shenca@bc.edu Chen is a fifth-year doctoral student in the ADEP program and has been working in lab for over four years. She is interested in documenting and explaining cross-national differences in math performance in terms of possible metacognitive and motivational mechanisms. She hope that her research can eventually benefit parents, students, educators, and policy makers. After graduation, she plans to either continue conducting cross-national research and/or teach at a university. When not thinking about my research, she enjoys trying out healthy recipes and reading books. |
![]() Shenira Perez
perezsj@bc.edu Shenira is currently a fourth- year doctoral student in the ADEP program. Some of the projects she is currently involved with focus on identifying factors that predict teachers' unconstructive differentiated treatment of students, exploring the potential negative effects of curved grading policies on students' motivation, as well as investigating the potential relationship between teachers' beliefs about social justice and their differentiated treatment of students. When not engaged in grad school/research related activities, she loves going back home to Miami, playing video games with her boyfriend, and smothering her dogs with affection. |
